The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revealed that last year, the airline industry suffered from its biggest decline since World Was II.
Passenger numbers fell 3.5% last year for the first time in years. This contributed to the demise of a number of airlines.
“In terms of demand, 2009 goes into the history books as the worst year the industry has ever seen,” Giovanni Bisignani, director general of the IATA, declared.
Flyglobespan and SkyEurope both filed for bankruptcy while others had to rely on government assistance to sty afloat.
British Airways posted record losses of £401 million and they are not out of the woods yet, like many other airlines.
