The chief executive of British Airways has called for a third runway to be built at London Heathrow to make sure that London keeps its world-class business status.
London is a world capital and therefore needs to up-hold its links with the rest of the world. The number of destinations now offered has shrunk from 227 in 1990 to 180 today.
This is partly due to airlines concentrating on their most profitable routes, however it does not look good when Frankfurt offers 265 routes, Amsterdam offers 260 and Paris Charles de Gaulle offers 223. These figures are set to rise to the 300 mark by 2015.
The other airports all have between four and five runways, whereas Heathrow only has two and they are chock full all day long. If they had three runways then they could offer more routes and there may possibly be less traffic.
