In this second part of the top holiday destinations for UK holiday makers on a budget, my next recommendation is the diving resort of Sharm el Sheikh on the Red Sea coast of Egypt.
Egypt as a holiday destination, and Sharm el Sheikh in particular, is becoming more popular with both couples and families and being outside of Europe and the dreading credit crunch, UK holiday makers will see their holiday money go further against the Egyptian Pound.
With average flight times from the UK to Sharm el Sheikh around the 5-hour mark, Egypt is one of the closest destinations for sun lovers to experience soaring temperatures.
Egypt has year-round sunshine with monthly temperatures regularly rising above 20C (70F). The heat hits the 30s between May and October, usually peaking at 36C (102F) between June and August. With the best times for UK holiday makers to go being April or November when the weather is a little cooler.
But it is not just the sun, sea, and sand that is making Egypt popular as a summer getaway.
The resort of Sharm el Sheikh sits at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula on the Red Sea coast. This ancient fishing village became popular with divers in the 1980s and has grown in popularity over the last 25-years. As Sharm el Sheikh is located on the edge of the desert, much of the best scenery and activity is underwater: there are brightly-coloured coral reefs and exotic marine life is abundant, much of which is unique to the area.
Flights: A cheap flight to Sharm el Sheikh from London Gatwick on 21st April 2009 for 2-adults for 7-nights, flying with Easyjet starts at about £202 per person.
Hotel: The Domina Coral Bay Oasis is a magnificent 5-Star resort and combined with its sister Domina hotels it extends over one million square metres overlooking the wonderful bay with a stunning view over the reef and the nearby Tiran Island. Set in the magnificent Sheikh Coast Bay where the rocky desert of the Sinai drops sharply to the crystal clear water of the Red Sea and the natural Shades of the Palm trees and the exotic flowers create a magical tropical atmosphere. A Garden View Room with Bed & Breakfast for 2-adults for a 7-night stay starts from £330 per room (£165 per person).
What can you do in Sharm el Sheikh? Lazy Day Red Sea Snorkelling Cruise includes visits to three sites within Tiran Island Ras Mohamed national park. Prices start from £36 per adult and £18 per child, and includes lunch on the boat. No visit to Egypt would be complete without an excursion around the sites of ancient Egypt, including Cairo, Luxor and the temples of Abu Simbel. Luxor is about 150 miles from Sharm El Sheikh. For more information on Sharm el Sheikh see our Egypt Travel Guide.
Total cost: Summer Holidays to Sharm el Sheikh in April start from about £367 per person departing on Tuesday 21st April 2009 for a 7-nights holiday from London Gatwick Airport staying at the 5-Star Domina Coral Bay Oasis resort on Sheikh Coast Bay in Sharm el Sheikh.
