Cardiff Airport has been working on a project to erect a new Air Traffic Control radar tower for the past 18 months.
The new, state of the art equipment is being repositioned in order to comply more fully with the Civil Aviation Authority requirements.
Following a consultation of many different sites on the airfield, the new radar will be erected on the south side of the airfield adjacent to the fire training ground. The location has been selected to improve radar coverage for aircraft safety.
Ground level works have been underway for several weeks, and a crane will be on site to erect the 20 metre tower from Monday, 25 January 2010. This work should be completed by Friday, 29 January 2010, weather permitting.
The next step of the project will be to add the radar head on top of the tower, which will happen over the next few weeks. The new system will be turning from May/June 2010 in order for it to be tested.
The project will be completed by July 2010 when the new radar will be fully operational.
Cardiff Airport would like to invite members of the public to the next Airport Consultative Committee meeting to discuss any issues or concerns you may have regarding the new project. The meeting will be held at the airport on Monday, 15 February at 1800, click here for more information and to register your attendance.
