Holidaymakers who were affected by the failure of XL Airways have until Friday 11th September to file their claim for compensation.
XL Airways collapsed on September 12th 2008 which left 200,000 people trying to get refunds from the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority).
Only 85,000 of those people booked with an ATOL-bonded agent which meant that they were automatically entitiled to a refund. However, almost a quarter of those people have not yet asked for their money back.
The CAA has received 65,102 claims with 55,324 already settled.
The deadline is down to the terms of the Air Trust Payment policy. The CAA can only pay valid claims that are received within 12 months of the date of failure. So claims will not be accepted after midnight on September 11th.
If you booked directly with the airline, you are not eligible for ATOL compensation and should therefore contact your travel insurance provider or credit card company.
If you were with an ATOL-bonded agent then you just need to speak to your travel provider or print of the CAA forms from the ATOL website for a refund.
