The call for a new airport in the Thames estuary have been rejected according to the campaign director of Future Heathrow.

It has been agreed that a fresh approach is needed for the future of Heathrow but a new airport is not the answer.

Closing Heathrow and creating a new airport elsewhere would cost a ridiculous amount and the environmental impact would be huge. Those who voted in favour of the new airport had seriously underestimated these factors.

“Where are the houses, schools, hospitals road and rail system to go if we build a new hub airport in the south-east? And what will happen to employment in west London and the Thames Valley if we lose Heathrow?” was the question being asked. There are 72,000 jobs at Heathrow which people cannot afford to lose.

There definitely has to be a new approach, even though a new aiport was not the answer. This is to ensure that Heathrow can compete with its European neighbours such as Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam.
