New research has revealed that British shoppers are destined to get more bang for their buck Stateside, with popular gift prices that are reportedly up to 62% cheaper than in the UK.Post Office Travel Money compiled a list of ten must-have items, ranging from a Ralph Lauren jumper to a Star Wars Ultimate FX Lightsaber and Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream. Boston came out as the best place to go for bargain buys, with a saving of 48% on the same items bought in London, costing around £663 compared with £1,296 in the UK capital.
With direct flights from the UK to Boston covered by four different airlines – American Airlines, Delta, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways – there’s certainly no lack of opportunity to pop over and treat yourself to a world-class shopping experience in the city. Boston is able to offer such good value because of a lower sales tax than other places in the USA, but New York also manages to offer a 44 per cent saving on London prices at a total of around £716.
New York’s bustling shopping areas, cosmopolitan cafés and frequent flight schedule to the UK make for a perfect quick break destination, while Boston’s museums, galleries and generally cheaper costs provide a safe bet for the budget-conscious.
The East Coast fares well for shopping trips but also mentioned in the report is Las Vegas, famed for its casinos, hotels, nightlife and top-class entertainment. The test-list of essential gifts can be picked up for around £710 here, although its distance from the UK might tempt shoppers to take a bit of a longer holiday – perfect for including another short hop over to Los Angeles or San Francisco.
