With British Airways having been flying direct routes to Buenos Aires since the start of 2011, Argentina has clearly been enjoying a boost in popularity amongst British holidaymakers.
The South American country famed for its juicy steaks, gauchos, fine wines and epic scenery has always been something of an aspirational destination, but the increasing number of travel options is bringing it within reach of more and more Brits looking for a Latin American spark in their holidays. As well as BA’s direct flights, operators such as Kuoni are reporting significantly increased sales for 2011 to date, and adventure travel to the Patagonia region is also on the up.
Such as vast country so richly blessed with natural and cultural attractions would require a serious amount of time to explore from end to end, but travellers can pick and choose areas to visit according to their interests. The capital Buenos Aires is one of the region’s urban gems: vibrant and cosmopolitan, combining modern and historical districts, and offering a wide range of accommodation options. Dance fans should take the opportunity to delve into the city’s passion for the tango, either by taking lessons in one of the many schools or enjoying a performance at one of the city’s famous ballrooms.
Outdoor pursuits fanatics should try a stay at an estancia, or ranch, offering fishing, hiking, horse riding and many other activities, while nature lovers should also take in the amazing Iguacu Falls on the border between Argentina and Brazil. The Valdes Peninsula also showcases some of Argentina’s finest natural attractions, with a rich variety of marine wildlife to enjoy and deserted beaches bordering the warm waters of the Atlantic. Patagonia stretches out in Chile and is also a must-visit area for travellers seeking natural beauty and adventure.
Wine lovers should head to the Medoza region of the country to sample the finest examples of Argentinean viticulture while relaxing in the beautiful scenery in the foothills of the Andes.
